three simple ways to slow down and find rest in god

a little note:
I’ve never been much for sharing pictures of myself... but my grandson snapped this one the other morning while I was sitting outside with my coffee and my study notes. He said, "Grandma, you look like you’re thinking about important stuff!" I guess in a way, I was.
So here’s a rare little glimpse... just me, a cup of coffee, some scribbled notes, and a quiet morning with God. 🌿

I don’t know when Sundays started feeling as busy as every other day... but somehow, they did.

Even on the days I mean to slow down, I find myself checking my phone, making lists, thinking about Monday before Sunday has even had a chance to breathe.

Rest doesn’t happen by accident anymore.
It’s something we have to choose... like opening a door instead of walking past it.

If you’re tired — soul-tired — and wondering how to actually find rest in God, here are three simple ways I’ve been learning to slow down.

They’re not perfect. They’re not magic.
But they’re small doors back to peace... and maybe that’s enough.

1. read just one piece of scripture, slowly

Not a whole chapter. Not a whole reading plan.

Just one Psalm.
Or one small story from the Gospels.
Something you can sit with... not rush through.

Sometimes I open to Psalm 23 and just read the first line:
"The Lord is my Shepherd, I lack nothing."

And then I stop.
And I sit with it like I’m letting warm sunlight fall on my face.

You don’t have to rush through Scripture to be faithful.
Sometimes the Spirit speaks most clearly when you’re still long enough to listen.

2. turn off the noise for a little while

It sounds simple, but it’s harder than it looks.

One hour. No TV in the background.
No news updates.
No scrolling through everyone else's highlight reels.

Just quiet.
Real quiet.

Maybe you sit outside and listen to the birds.
Maybe you stand by the kitchen sink and just breathe.
Maybe you lie on your bed with your Bible open, not even reading, just letting yourself be still.

The world is loud and fast because it wants you to stay distracted.
God is soft and steady because He wants you to stay close.

3. talk to god like a friend

Not like you’re performing a speech.
Not like you’re trying to get the words "right."

Just talk.

Tell Him what’s heavy on your heart.
Tell Him what you’re worried about.
Tell Him you’re tired.

I often find myself whispering little things like,
"Lord, I don’t even know what to pray today. But I’m here. I’m listening."

And somehow, even when I feel like I have nothing to offer... He meets me anyway.

Prayer isn’t about impressing God.
It’s about inviting Him into your real life — messy, scattered, and beautiful as it is.

If you’re tired today... I hope you know it’s okay to stop.
It’s okay to rest.
It’s okay to let Sunday be what it was always meant to be — a day to remember that we were never meant to carry it all ourselves.

You are loved.
You are held.
And you don’t have to earn God’s rest.
It’s already yours.
